A marvelous monument to Private Owens and the First Marylander's from a divided border state. Andy, is the marker different than the monument, or is the monument located at Stephenson's Depot? Great image that's worth a visit. - Mike (V/F)

Andy Lawless replied:

The Battle of Rutherford's Farm, also known as Carter's Farm and Stephenson's Depot, was a small engagement between Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Stephen D. Ramseur and Union forces under Brig. Gen. William W. Averell on July 20, 1864, in Frederick County, Virginia, during the American Civil War, as part of Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early 's Valley Campaign, resulting in a Union victory. The statue is in "Marker is in Lothian; Maryland; in Anne Arundel County. Marker is on Mt. Zion Marlboro Road (Maryland Route 408) 0.1 miles west of Ed Prout Road; on the right when traveling west.

This was commissioned by a distant cousin and he stands guard over our family cemetery. We may not agree with the evil institution that many blame for the war, but the resolve of Pvt Owens had to fight the federal who illegally executed our fellow Statesman is what we celebrate.
